backend – Is this possible to write the back end using javascript?

As we all know, the javascript is widely spread on the web, doing the client side scripting, it does a great job. But is this possible to take javascript outside the browser? For example, writing a streaming socket or writing DB, doing schedule job? That\’s things like in back end? Thanks.
